Heterogeneous Crystal Nucleation from the Melt in Polyethylene Oxide Droplets on Graphite: Kinetics and Microscopic Structure

چکیده

It is well known that the crystallization of liquids often initiates at interfaces to foreign solid surfaces. In this study, using polarized light optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), we investigate effect substrate–material interactions on nucleation in an ensemble polyethylene oxide (PEO) droplets graphite amorphous polystyrene (PS). The measurements during cooling with a constant rate explicitly evidenced substrate enhances kinetics, as occurred approximately 11 °C higher temperature than PS due changes interface. This observation allowed us conclude induces heterogeneous PEO. By employing classical theory for analysis data reference substrate, obtained results indicated crystal nuclei contact angles range 100–117° were formed Furthermore, show led preferred orientation PEO crystals graphite, whereas had isotropic orientation. difference orientations two substrates was also confirmed AFM, which showed only edge-on lamellae compared unoriented PS.

Polymer crystal-melt interfaces and nucleation in polyethylene

Kinetic barriers cause polymers to crystallize incompletely, into nanoscale lamellae interleaved with amorphous regions. As a result, crystalline polymers are full of crystal-melt interfaces, which dominate their physical properties. The longstanding theoretical challenge to understand these interfaces has new relevance, because of accumulating evidence that polymer crystals often nucleate via ...

Heterogeneous crystal nucleation on bubbles in silicate melt

Experiments reported herein document heterogeneous crystal nucleation on bubbles in supercooled lithium disilicate melt. Crystalline lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5) nucleated and grew on small bubbles (;1 mm) with a one-to-one correspondence between the number of bubbles and crystals (ranging from ,102 to ;105 bubbles/mm3). Crystals grew on large bubbles (.100 mm) only in samples fused in N2, sug...

Effect of the surface-stimulated mode on the kinetics of homogeneous crystal nucleation in droplets.

The thermodynamics of surface-stimulated crystal nucleation demonstrates that if at least one of the facets of the crystal is only partially wettable by its melt, then it is thermodynamically more favorable for the nucleus to form with that facet at the droplet surface rather than within the droplet. So far, however, the kinetic aspects of this phenomenon had not been studied at all. In the pre...

Surface nucleation in the crystallisation of polyethylene droplets.

The division of semi-crystalline polymeric material into small domains is an effective tool for studying crystal nucleation. The scaling behavior of the nucleation rate as a function of domain size can reveal important information about the mechanism responsible for the birth of a crystal nucleus. We have investigated the process of crystal nucleation in a system of dewetted polyethylene drople...
